Project title:
Affordance, Confluence and Synthesis

Project name:
Orylis

Project leader:
Ash Yeo Yeok Seng

Brief / Abstract:
Product Design studio with the creative design process topic addressing:
"Creative concept process tools of Affordances, Confluences & Synthesis in Design"
It will be a simple instructional "objects making" engaging the 3 basic critically creative process terms.
Design Learning:
What does it mean to "Ideate" (Refer to Divergent & Convergent Thinking Processes)
Way-finding / Pathfinding
A clear and thorough programme activity of:
Questioning, defining, qualifying, framing, identifying contexts
Typifying and systemising, finding, sourcing, sense-making, generative divergent explorations and convergent processes, iterative feedback loops for redefinitions
Natural situational narrative feedback (users, environments, phenomena, general ethics, experience structures)

Project descriptions:
Activities:
1) Investigate, Play, Explore, Collage/Assemblage, Moodboard:
Synthesis
Affordances
Confluences
2) Explore Adjective Functions: Un, De, Co, Contra, etc etc (search adj. mapping)
Loosen, couple with research on Poetic Objects Marcel Duchamp’s Readymades
3) Begin with a selection of Simple Functional Object Types:
Containers, Seats, Shelving, etc
Then, Discover new Types
The journey:
This project was largely about exploring the world around us, finding what spoke to us, how the forms of things and their environment influenced the way we interacted with them.

Eventually, I found interest in modular systems, interlocking, expandable, simple units with high customisability. I was also fascinated by the fluidity, irregularity and yet adaptability and versatility of nature.

The concept:
As a show of appreciation for nature and an attempt to harmonise the organic and the industrialised, this concept utilised lightly processed branches that are often discarded and wasted, combined with readily available, manufactured attachments to make highly customisable home furniture pieces.
